BarcoNext: Cloud-Based Barcode, Stock & POS App

Project overview

BarcoNext is a barcode-based sales and stock management app we built for small and mid-sized businesses such as markets, shops, cafés and restaurants. It runs both as a web app in the browser and as a desktop app on Windows, macOS and Linux. Because it runs on a cloud server, owners can check stock, sales and income-expense reports from anywhere, even when they are not at the store.

The challenge

Many small businesses still use old desktop barcode software installed on a single computer. Reports can only be viewed at that computer, and data from multiple branches or tills doesn't come together. Fully cloud-based systems, on the other hand, stop the till the moment the internet drops. Businesses needed a system that is accessible from anywhere and keeps working without an internet connection.

The solution

We designed BarcoNext to meet both needs.

Access from anywhere: data is stored on a cloud server. Owners can check stock, daily sales and income-expense reports instantly from their phone or home computer.

Offline mode: the till keeps working when the internet drops. Sales are queued on the device and sync automatically with the server when the connection returns.

Fast checkout: a clean POS screen lets cashiers sell quickly with minimal training. It includes barcode and name search, split cash/card payments, change calculation, held sales, returns and F1–F12 shortcuts.

For performance and reliability, the back end is built with Go and PostgreSQL. The front end uses Next.js, and the desktop app is built with Electron and updates automatically. A multi-tenant architecture keeps each business's data separate and secure. We explain how barcode-based stock management works in our article How Does a Barcode Inventory System Work?. For a similar system, see our custom software development service.

The result

With BarcoNext, businesses bring sales, stock and reporting together in one system. The till keeps running even when the internet drops, and owners can follow their business from anywhere.
